The Business Case for Beauty: Design's Most Potent Weapon [SE3]

For years, design champions have argued that the designer’s impact goes far beyond the aesthetic. But are we ignoring design’s most potent weapon for creating unique, compelling and resilient buildings, infrastructure, landscapes, interiors and products? Is it time to reconsider the case for beauty? This special Canadian event at NeoCon 2011, organized by Ontario’s Design Industry Advisory Committee, will bring together an all-star, cross-disciplinary panel of Canadian design leaders. They will explore the economic, social and sustainability impacts of beautiful design and its defining role in 21st-century innovation.

Arlene Gould (Moderator), MBA, RGD, FRSA is Strategic Director for the Design Industry Advisory Committee, in Toronto. She is an Adjunct Professor at York University and Coordinator of the Design Management Program at Ryerson University and an Executive Board Member of Sustainable Buildings Canada.

Paul Filek is Managing Partner at Burdifilek and has over 20 years experience designing retail, hospitality and real estate development environments. Internationally recognized as design leaders, Burdifilek’s portfolio boasts numerous award-winning designs for hotels, condo developments, department stores and specialty retailers in Canada, the US and abroad. www.burdifilek.com • Janna Levitt is a principal of Levitt Goodman Architects in Toronto and is also an active as a lecturer, critic, adjunct professor and jury member. Her firm is widely published nationally and internationall and is recognized as a leading design firm through awards such as the Givernor General's Gold Medal for Excellence in Architecture, a RAIC Gold Medal for Innovation in Architecture, several Design Effectiveness awards, Canadian Architect, Ontario Association of Architects and Toronto Urban Design Awards.
