Interiors & Sources Materials Pavilion

The materials you choose for furniture and interiors can make or break a project. Durability, sustainability, economy, availability and, of course, design and form compatibility are all factors, but gathering and making sense of the all the information you need is often a daunting task.
In the Interiors & Sources Materials Pavilion you’ll find hundreds of material samples displayed side-by-side, with details on their origin, makeup and recommended applications. This experiential, educational exhibit is curated by design historian and materials specialist Grace Jeffers, and populated with the help of Material Intelligence (www.materialintelligence.com.), an information resource on surfacing solutions for designers and fabricators.
The Interiors & Sources Materials Pavilion will be hosting its educational exhibits and sponsoring CEU presentations at NeoCon 2013. We invite you to visit, browse, ask questions and get inspired!

Outdoor Office Exhibition
The Merchandise Mart, 7th Floor
Jonathan Olivares is a Los Angeles-based designer who established his eponymous studio in 2006 and develops industrial design objects, exhibitions, and research projects, focusing on a human-centered approach to design in which the needs of the user are brought to the fore.
The Outdoor Office, designed by Jonathan Olivares, looks at an area that has until now been unexplored: the types of furniture used for outdoor activities other than leisure and entertainment pursuits. This speculative design project was developed with the goal of understanding the possibility of new types of office spaces located outdoors for education and business environments.
As working habits change and our mobile devices, attached to us like appendages, allow us the freedom to work outside traditional offices, increasingly we are seeking alternative spaces that make productive activities feasible outdoors. This in turn demands new types of outdoor furniture and architectural elements. The Outdoor Office synthesizes the result of Olivares’s findings, from inspirational images drawn from film, television, and existing offices and conceptual projects to models he developed for new types of offices and furniture systems, which are inventive tools for studying and working in both public and private spaces. Although hypothetical, Olivares’s research sets a benchmark for new thinking and discovery, encouraging further examination of this important developing area of design.
